The Happiness Advantage: Locus of Control

Take two seconds to imagine a situation where you’ve applied for a new dream job, a big promotion, or even put yourself out there and asked out somebody you’ve been crushing on. It doesn’t “go your way.” Would you leave it at that and think “that’s unfair!”? Or, would you learn from your mistakes and do everything you can to improve yourself before the next opportunity? REALLY try to think what you would do before reading this quote.

Feeling that we are in control, that we are masters of  our own fate at work and at home, is one of the strongest drivers of both well-being and performance… the most successful people, in work and in life, are those who have what psychologists call an “internal locus of control,” the belief that their actions have a direct effect on their outcomes. People with and external locus, on the other hand, are more likely to see daily events as dictated by external forces.” -Shawn Achor (pg.130)
