Sapiens: The Mind

There are too many situations to count in which you “want what you don’t have.” And when you get what you wanted, you’re not as happy as you thought you’d be. This quote makes us realize that our brain is wired to always be craving, whether that’s craving something NEW in order to solve a problem in our lives, or craving something MORE in order to keep that good feeling flowing as long as possible. Besides, if good feelings lasted forever, as soon as our earliest ancestors found their first loves, they would have gone hungry while basking in the glory and we wouldn’t be here.

When the mind experiences something distasteful it craves to be rid of the irritation. When the mind experiences something pleasant, it craves that the pleasure will remain and will intensify. Therefore, the mind is always dissatisfied and restless.”
